Science Fair Presentation

This is my Science Fair board for this year. My topic was: Does the Salinity in Water effect it’s evaporation time? My Hypothesis (theory) was that the fresh water would evaporate the fastest because the research shows that salt water is denser than fresh water, and I thought that there were more molecules in the salt water that needed to be heated than the fresh water. My results proved me half right because the water with a small amount of salt evaporated the fastest. I think this is because the small amount of salt gave the water less heat resistance, and the added molecules helped to spread the heat around.

Science Explanation

What is Evaporation?

When a liquid like water heats up, or cools down, the liquid then changes into a vaporous state, like steam. This process is called evaporation, and is part of one of the most important processes on our planet Earth. This very important process is called the Water Cycle.

Water is the most common liquid to evaporate on a day to day basis. Research shows that about 15 million tons of moisture evaporates every second, just from the heat of the Sun. The most common process of evaporation starts with heat. The chemical name for water is H2O, which means two cells of Hydrogen, and one cell of Oxygen. Oxygen is the air we breathe, and Hydrogen is a cell with no neurons and one proton. The H2O cells then vibrate with the increasing heat, and begin to bounce off one another. The cells end up pushing each other away, and they rise to the surface of the water. These cells then become known as steam, another part of the Water Cycle. The other way of evaporation starts with coldness. The liquid cools down and the same process begins; only the cells vibrate because of the cold.

The connection between evaporation and the environment is actually quite huge. If there were no evaporation on planet Earth, the water resources would soon dry up, and with no evaporation to continue the Water Cycle, all living things on Earth would die. Water is a precious resource, and vital to Earth’s survival.

In conclusion, evaporation is a process that keeps our planet alive and healthy, but this health rapidly declining, due to human pollution. Evaporation is a reaction between molecules of water reacting to temperature increase or decrease. Evaporation usually occurs when there is an increase of heat in H2O, or water.
